Research Students Committee

The Research Students Committee (RSC) was established in 2006 in response to recommendation that research students should have a greater voice and an active role in developments at UWIC.

The role of the committee is to:
  • Represent the interests of the research student community within UWIC and externally
  • Promote social and related activities for the research student community
  • Meet a minimum of six times each year to review academic issues
  • Appoint student members to Research Degrees Committee (RDC) and Research & Enterprise Board.

The committee has student representation from across the five academic schools of Art & Design, Education, Health Sciences, Management and Sport, and from the National Centre for Product Design & Development Research (PDR).

Members of staff are not permitted to join the committee unless they are registered for a research degree. The committee has three members who are also members of staff.

Representing Research Students

The RSC’s purpose is to take issues, concerns or ideas of research students to UWIC’s committees and boards. Issues brought to RDC have resulted in consultations with senior staff and participation within working parties to attempt to resolve them. These have included:
  • Seeking clarification on the levels and specific purposes of bursary awards
  • Addressing issues relating to levels of IT access
If you have any issues, concerns or ideas, please contact your school student representative. Issues will be taken, anonymously if requested, first to school level boards and committees, or if appropriate to UWIC’s committees and boards.

Organisation of events

Another aspect of the RSC's work is to bring together research students to join in inter-disciplinary activities to enhance the student experience, create networks, share knowledge and develop friendships.

One of the activities organised by RSC this academic year has been a forum held during Skills Week which provided
research students with the opportunity to question senior staff about research developments within UWIC.

Another is the Poster Conference held in October 07, which attracted 33 researchers who competed for the coveted “best poster” prizes totalling £1200.

If you have any event ideas, issues or concerns, please get in touch with your school student representative. Contact details are listed in the table above.
