Research Studies Manual
The pursuit of research is an exciting and important activity which is a fundamental part of University life.
The Research Studies Manual sets out the regulations, procedures and advice that UWIC has developed to assist all those involved in Postgraduate Research Degrees to manage the process effectively. It is intended to build on the information given to research students and supervisors in the annual round of Induction Training, Best Practice workshops, and Skills Week workshops run by the Research Degrees Committee (RDC).
If you have enrolled on a part-time research programme, please refer to this guidance document.
The Research Studies Manual is divided into six sections, each of which is a stand–alone document (or set of documents),available electronically and in hard copy.
In most cases where documents are templates, you should download the relevant document and complete it electronically.
Section 1 consists of Handbook(s) for research students, research supervisors and professional doctorates giving advice or guidance on specific points that are important in the course of most degree programmes.
Section 2 sets out UWIC’s Code of Practice for research degrees. This amplifies on the Regulations, and details responsibilities for the conduct and administration of research degrees.
Section 3 sets out the Regulations for MPhil and PhD Degrees by Research, as approved in 2007. Regulations are reviewed regularly, and the set of regulations in force at the time when a student enrols are the definitive regulations for the whole of that student’s degree programme. Earlier versions of the regulations can be downloaded from this site. In practice, RDC will allow the rules of the current regulations to apply to students enrolled under earlier regulations where this is to the student’s advantage.
Section 4 is the Skills Record aims to help research students and their supervisors to look at the training needs and skills acquirement of the student. It forms the fist step in the student developing a personal development portfolio (PDP), and can be used to record formal meetings of the student with the supervisory team.
Section 5 contains UWIC’s Research Ethics Committee (UREC) Forms and Procedures needed for applying for approval. Many projects do not need UREC approval. This document gives advice on which projects need approval, and how to proceed. Additionally, each School Ethics Committee makes available advice on ethical issues relevant to its own research area, and which the student and supervisor will need to consult.
Section 6 contains the Forms and Guidelines needed for the various steps of a research degree programme, and advice on completing the process and the forms. In the case of the Annual Monitoring Form, separate advice is given for the student and supervisory team. Forms must be downloaded and completed electronically.
