RAE
UWIC has developed a strategic approach to the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) that recognises its distinctive strengths as an organisation. By leading with those areas of expertise we aim is to develop a strong profile of research outputs across the organisation.
The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) is a key component in evaluating the relative merits of research across the UK’s higher education institutions. Conducted by panels of expert academics, the RAE assessments are qualified using a seven-point scale ranging from 1 to the highest 5*. These evaluations are carried out across 70 units of assessment. Quality profiles are then used to guide and inform the sharing out of research funding.
RAEs are carried out every eight years with the next scheduled for 2008.
In 2001 UWIC’s ratings in the RAE were as follows:
| Unit of Assessment | 2001 Rating |
| 11 Other studies and professions allied to Medicine | 3b |
| 16 Food Science and Technology | 3b |
| 64 Art and Design | 4 |
| 69 Sports related subjects | 3a |
The RAE is conducted on behalf of the Higher Education Funding Council for England, Scotland and Wales, and the Department of Education for Northern Ireland.
