The Fast and Loose in Fine Art

Medusa surprises Perseus at the beach wear outletNEW series of paintings by Cherry Pickles, senior lecturer at UWIC’s Cardiff School of Art & Design, has attracted attention from the world of Fine Art.

The three paintings which were shown at the prestigeous National Eisteddfod, were enjoyed and appreciated by visitors at the show.  New paintings from the series are booked to tour London and New York, over the next two years.

The body of work is part of a series of 7 paintings entitled ‘The Fast and Loose’, which took their inspiration from a trans-US road trip the artist had taken in the summer of 2006. The reflective research was co-sponsored by The Arts Council of Wales and the University of Wales in Cardiff.

“Somehow my US road trip has acted as a catalyst in uniting all the strands that I have developed in my work over the last twenty years.” the artist explains.

“Working in the new world has allowed me to see my old world much more sharply, inventively and productively.”

Cherry Pickles and UWIC colleague Carol Robertson, are exhibiting their inspirational work at  Cardiff's BayArt Gallery, this week. The gallery promotes the best of Welsh and international contemporary art.

The two painters are presenting a collective body of work on their individual responses and interpretations of a journey entitled 'Being There'.

Private viewing: Friday 7th September.
The exhibition continues until 20th October, 2007, opening Tuesday – Saturday from 12 – 5pm.
