Food Industry Centre hosts 2nd Food Network Wales Conference

UWIC's Food Industry Centre hosts its second Food Network Wales Technical conference in conjunction with the UK branch of the international Association of Food Protection (UKAFP).

The internationally-renowned attracted high profile speakers and delegates representing most links in the food chain. Over 70 Welsh companies attended the conference which was held at the Village Hotel, Cardiff on 14th June.

Important international and local issues were addressed by the   speakers who included Mr Frank Yiannas, Disney's Global Manager for Food Safety and Health, and Dr Christine Little from the Health Protection Agency, London. The event was chaired by Professor Hugh Pennington, who led the E. coli outbreak investigation in Lanarkshire and who is now chairing the South Wales E. coli Inquiry .

One of the themes highlighted at the conference was ' organisational culture' and its importance in managing food safety. This is a relatively new and innovative approach in food safety management and UWIC is one of the World's leading centres in its application.

Other important topics included changes to UK food safety qualifications, contamination of ready to eat fruit and vegetables as a cause of foodborne illness and the role of industry voluntary codes of practice.  The latter covered ISO22000 launched just over a year ago and the more recently introduced SALSA standard.

The final speaker considered much needed mechanisms for supporting the Welsh food industry and the conference ended with a wide ranging discussion of key food safety issues for Wales.

A delegation from UWIC will be attending the International Association of Food Protection conference (largest in the world ) on 9th-13th July, which is being held at Disneyland, Florida.
