Biomedical Science Enterprise and Research Centre (BSERC)
Research is focused on:
- Molecular and cell biology
- Microbiology and infection
- Environmental chemistry
The centre also aims to provide technical support and advice to SMEs and industry in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors.
Food Research & Consultancy Unit (FRCU)
The FRCU has an international reputation for food safety research and provides expertise, training and advice to the food industry. Much of our work with industry is through Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. The Unit has 5 academic staff supported by postdoctoral researchers, research assistants, technicians and an administrator.Research interests:
- Food microbiology and microbiological risk assessment
- Food safety management
- Psychology of food safety behaviour
- Functional foods and probiotics
- Diet and nutrition
The Packaging Innovation Group
The Packaging Innovation Group works closely with the National Centre for Product Design and Development Research (PDR). The group has the unique capability of drawing on the resources of the two industry–renowned centre’s, one specialising in food (FRCU) and the other in design (PDR), to offer an expert service in food industry branding, packaging, promotion, development and research.
The group is a sponsor of the True Taste of Wales ’Innovation Packaging’ award, which recognises the contribution of innovative packaging of food in Wales, and how it has created or invigorated a business.
Centre for Health Safety and Environment (CHSE)
CHSE provides research, consultancy and training services to organisations in the public and private sectors.
The centre can act as a focal point to those organisations wishing to ensure legal compliance and enhance their health, safety and environmental performance. The expertise and activities of staff within the School of Applied Sciences are co–ordinated through Rhys Sherman the Centre’s Consultancy and Training Officer.
