Graduate Skills
Research training is about more than producing a thesis, although that of course is key to the successful completion of the process.
UWIC expects that its research students will develop a broad range of skills during their training, appropriate for a wide range of careers in the public, professional or private sectors.

In addition to formal research training, UWIC offers research students opportunities to develop their personal effectiveness through a range of online and workshop-based programmes. Because these skills are so important in the workplace, students maintain a professional development portfolio (PDP) of their skills and training, and review their personal development plans regularly with their supervisory team.
Students who are involved in undergraduate teaching must undertake training in Higher Education pedagogy. For those involved in the occasional teaching session, UWIC’s “Teaching Toolkit” gives an excellent introduction to developing pedagogical skills. Those who are to be involved in regular timetabled teaching should enroll on the Postgraduate Certificate “Teaching in Higher Education”.
UWIC’s Skills Week, which currently runs for the week before Easter, offers research students the opportunity to network, as well as to learn how to make effective presentations, write applications for funding, or develop a variety of personal and management skills.
