Summary
Qualitiative research in sport and exercise psychology has tended to explore and challenge established theoretical and applied perspectives. Professor Gilbourne's own qualitative journey offers an alternative view.
Elements of his past work will be used to illustrate how undertaking different forms of qualitative research such as ethnography, action research and auto-ethnography acted to promote the complexities of context as well as serving to highlight the darker side of self and of sport, more generally.
