Ageing and Vascular Disease

Professor Jorge Erusalimsky
Cardiff School of Health Sciences

Date: 07 May 2008
Time: 5.45pm for 6pm start
Venue: Main Hall, UWIC, Llandaff Campus

Summary

Diseases of the vasculature have long been considered to be age-related in terms of their onset and progression.

Ageing is associated with dysfunction of the inner lining of blood vessels (the endothelium), with defective blood vessel repair and with an increasing prevalence of atherosclerosis. The reasons for these associations are still unclear, but it is plausible that the wear and tear processes that are thought to contribute to human ageing may play an important role in the development of vascular pathologies.

In his inaugural lecture Professor Erusalimsky will review current research, including ongoing work at UWIC, on the mechanisms that lead to ageing of the endothelium, and in particular on the role that oxidative stress and the loss of cell renewal capacity might play in this process. He will also discuss findings that may lead to the development of new therapeutic approaches to fight vascular diseases.
