Summary
Many places, from city quarters to countries, have been themed, regenerated, re-imaged or re-branded. Such strategies are the familiar repertoire of place marketers. Tourists visit and consume landscapes, places and cultures that have been produced and presented through marketing, and the tourism industry itself plays a key role in the on-going cultural construction of tourism destinations.
Professor Morgan’s lecture will explore ‘the project of place’ and argue for a critical approach to the study of destination marketing which scrutinizes it as a complex, culturally contested act of ‘world-making’.
