Bacteria and Biofilm: An insight into the power of Microbial Communities

Professor Adrian Peters
Cardiff School of Health Sciences

Date: 07 November 2007
Time: 5.45pm for 6.00pm start
Venue: Main Hall, Llandaff Campus

Summary

It has long been recognised that in nature, bacteria have different strategies for proliferation and survival.  One of the most interesting of these is their ability to attach to surfaces to form communities known as biofilm.  Well known examples of these include dental plaque and the layer of slime on the surface of stones on the river bed.

In this lecture, Professor Peters will explore biofilm microbiology and the problems associated with studying bacteria in these communities.  He will examine problems associated with the food industry and the role of applied research in developing effective control strategies.
