Observations on Liliputia - Strategy and The Small Firm
Cardiff School of Management
Date: 03 October 2007
Time: 5.45pm for 6pm start
Venue: UWIC Lecture Theatre A031, Llandaff Campus
Summary
Graham Hall Joined UWIC in October 2006 as Professor of Management and is currently Director of the MBA Programme at the Cardiff School of Management.
At this inaugural lecture, Graham will present the case of the small firm as the dominant business life form since the 1980s, when it first attracted significant academic scrutiny. A clear lesson to be drawn is that much is taken for granted about large firms that is simply not relevant for the small firm.
It is argued that sustainable long-term competitive advantage is a rarity, as is non-reactive strategic management. Given that text books are usually aimed at decision makers within large firms, perhaps the time is now ripe for them to be torn up and rewritten.
The lecture promises to raise much debate about the subject.
