UWIC Research Ethics Committee

Terms of Reference


The UWIC Research Ethics Committee (UREC) is a sub-committee of the Academic Board.  Its remit is to ensure that all research involving human participants carried out by students and staff within UWIC or at other locations conforms to the highest ethical standards.


Its duties are:

  1. To advise on ethical matters pertaining to the conduct of research, both individual and collaborative.
  2. To establish, implement, and keep under review codes of practice, procedures, and guidelines for the consideration, approval, and monitoring of research projects involving human participants which are undertaken by members of staff and/or student members of the University.
  3. To ensure that ethical principles are clearly laid down and are disseminated to staff and student members, and that ethical practices are implemented.
  4. To delegate, where appropriate, decisions on applications for ethical approval to the Schools of the University.
  5. To consider and advise on training arrangements to be put in place for those involved in considering applications under this machinery and, as and when appropriate, for those undertaking research involving human participants.
  6. To keep the University’s Ethical Guidelines under annual review.
  7. To make decisions, on behalf of Academic Board, on any ethical matters referred to it.
  8. To report annually to Academic Board on the numbers and types of projects considered by UREC, together with details of any policy or procedural changes recommended by the committee.
