Professional Doctorate

The Professional Doctorate is a professional qualification that includes taught, experiential and research elements at doctoral level, which addresses current professional issues.

The first part of the Professional Doctorate programme, which is undertaken by all candidates, consists of the Masters in Research programme. Candidates terminating their studies as the end of this phase are awarded the degree of Master in Research (MRes).

UWIC offers the following Professional Doctorate Degree Programmes:

  • Biomedical Sciences (DBMS)
  • Tourism (D Tourism)
  • Computer Sciences (D Comp Sci)
  • Business Administration (DBA)
  • Education (EdD)

 Periods of Study

Masters in Research (MRes)  Professional Doctorate

Full-time: 1 - 2 yrs

Full-time: 3 - 5 yrs
Part-time: 2 - 5 yrs Part-time: 4 - 9 yrs


Entry Requirements and Application for Admission

Students would normally progress onto the Professional Doctorate programme having completed 120 credits through taught modules at an appropriate UWIC Masters level. Exemptions from Masters level study may be granted if a candidate:
  • holds a Masters degree of an approved University obtained by research or advanced study, which provides sufficient academic background to allow completion of the programme;
  • has completed a minimum of one year’s full–time or two years part-time;
  • supervised postgraduate work in the same academic discipline, which provides sufficient academic background to allow completion of the programme;
  • can otherwise provide the Research Degrees Committee with satisfactory evidence equivalent to the above or that he/she has sufficient relevant expertise, experience or qualification beyond graduation for the purposes of completing the programme.
Students with relevant experience can apply for Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning AP(E)L, such applications would be assessed by the School’s Professional Doctorate Committee following counselling by a member of the proposed supervisory team.
