The Cardiff School of Art & Design has earned an enviable reputation for the quality of its research since establishing a Senior Fine Art Research Fellowship some 30 years ago.

Since then, the school has progressively broadened the scope of its research programmes into all the main areas of art and design. Much of its research is carried out in partnership with other schools within UWIC, other universities and organisations across the UK. The school has also developed proactive research partnerships with overseas institutions and organisations.

In 2001, Cardiff School of Art & Design achieved a Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) rating of 4 for its research activities. Product design research achieved a rating of 4.
